Commander
Do you ever think about what leadership means to you? Leadership is very important and is used everywhere. It could be used by the U.S. forces, athletes, government officials, or even at school. Leaders aren't people who just carry out their normal daily routine; they are people who go above and beyond and pull through to carry out the task that must be accomplished. The Webster Dictionary defines leadership as, “the power or ability to lead people”. I see much more in the term “leadership” than the definition online tells it. This term is used very often and many people don't know what they are actually saying. Leadership is the ability to lead and help something accomplish a task.
Leadership is not someone who is very good at a sport or job. Many people think that if you are good at something then you are automatically the leader of the group. It does help to be good but there is a lot more needed than that to be a good leader who does what is best for the group. One summer when I was at camp, the counselors showed us how important leadership is. We had to do an activity that consisted of getting 12 people on a box without touching the ground and the box was only 2 feet by 2 feet (This isn’t possible). We tried and tried for about 30 minutes until we realized that we needed a leader. We all voted and came to a conclusion on who the leader should be. He came up with an organized plan and settled the chaos of the group. The counselors proved to us how much more a group can do if they work together and have an effective leader.
My dad has a lot of leadership skills. He owns a very successful sign business called Art and Image. In his business he shows leadership because he is social, good at what he does, and always knows a solution if something changes or goes wrong. I hope his leadership skills rub off on me because it also makes him a great dad. When we go fishing together, he always show me what I need to do differently to reel in my line. When a fish is on, he helps me set the drag and tells me to keep my rod tip up.
George Washington had great leadership skills when he was in office. He had a lot of responsibility as president and as a general in the revolutionary war. He was brave and had the responsibility of watching over his army to ensure their safety. When I think of a leader, president Washington comes to mind because he led the nation, his army, and our country’s freedom. Kennedy Hickman says, “Washington's reputation for leadership and courage was based on his actions in another defeat at the hands of the French. In that battle, at Fort Duquesne (1755, often called the "Battle of the Wilderness" or "Braddock's Defeat"), Washington had two horses shot from under him and eventually had to assume command from the mortally wounded General Edward Braddock. Washington led the surviving British and Colonial soldiers on a successful retreat” (Washington Military Leader). You dont have to be the best at what you do to be a good leader; you just have to work hard and do whats best for the group. Even Washington made mistakes but he was still a great leader because he did what was best for our country and his army. According to World Book, “Washington returned to Virginia to hang up his sword. He was now the most famous American-born soldier. He knew how to train other soldiers and how to run an army. More important, he had shown courage and patience in leading his men” (Washington, George). You need to be a good leader to run an army and Washington was just that. If you lead an army and you are too aggressive you will get you and your men killed. On the other hand, if you don’t attack enough and just hide out at your base, then the enemy will come find you and kill your army. Washington had good judgement when it came to the decision to fight or retreat. Washington had great leadership skills because he was patient, skilled, and courageous.
Washington and many other people are great leaders because they know how to command a group. At the same time, many people think they are good leaders but are not due to bossiness, lack of communication, aggressiveness, or even passiveness. Leadership is not one specific way of doing something; it can be used in many different ways. Anyone can be a great leader if they can carry a group through a tough situation, especially if they have a skill such as being smart, strong, or are good with people. In other words, leadership is the ability to lead or help accomplish a task. Everyone should learn leadership skills because they can be used all throughout your lifetime. Leadership has a lot more meaning to it than just a general dictionary definition.
