Endangered
by Eliot Schrefer
In Endangered, Sophie, a 15 year old girl has to survive with, Otto, her baby Bonobo Ape out in the wild after a war breaks out in Congo. During the summer she is staying at her mom’s sanctuary helping out in the Ape enclosure. Sophie shows strength, courage, compassion, and love as she watches over Otto protecting him from the enemy soldiers. Once the electric fence to the enclosure shuts off, they have no safety barrier between them and the soldiers who took over the sanctuary. They must get out. The book shows the true challenges that Bonobos face as they are abused, enslaved, abandoned, or even killed. You will go on an amazing journey with Otto and Sophie as she learns to behave and survive like the other Bonobos.
Throughout Endangered, Eliot Schrefer does an excellent job of keeping the reader connected and threw in lots of detail and surprise. I really liked how when you read the book you couldn’t put it down due to all of the craziness that happened, on every page. I believe this book would mostly interest teens that love animals and nature because it is all about the Bonobos and how they live in their enclosure. It is also about how the smart apes have to survive during the war. Sophie must fight through the hardships of watching as her friends, and coworkers are murdered by the war that has ruined Congo as Sophie knew it before. All the villages and people are gone because of them. Will Sophie survive and be reunited with her mom and dad, or be captured by the soldiers? To find out, read Schrefer’s amazing novel.
